Description

Viking Urnes pendant: The engraving reproduces a Viking brooch belonging to Urnes style, a Scandinavian artistic style dated between 1050 – 1125 a.d., found in Tröllaskógur, Iceland.
The brooch represents an imaginary animal, a dragon, with elongated forms entwined with two serpents, ancient Scandinavian theme, monopolizing in the later period of Viking art.
The Urnes style (named for the famous stavekirke) spread itself in Scandinavia in the second half of the eleventh century keeping the traditional zoomorphic themes dear to the nordic art, but it made the forms more elongated and sinuous, it elaborated and softened the plots, conveying in its mood a sense of continuous movement, without stopping and resting, synthesizing in its restless nature the last decades the Viking age, now headed toward its sunset.
